In the United States, residential mailbox size and location of the box or mail slot is regulated by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Curbside mailboxes can be colorful and customized within those guidelines, but a locking box is recommended. New developments, however, generally have a centralized mailbox location with a bank of locking boxes and these cannot be customized in any way.

By law, only a USPS mail carrier is allowed to place anything in the mailbox, with the exception of outgoing mail to be picked up by the mail carrier. In curbside mailboxes, a red flag is raised on the box when there is mail for pickup. Centralized mailboxes do not have a pickup location and homeowners who have these must use another method for outgoing mail.
